Humidity is one of the biggest reasons guitars suddenly change. This printable guide is a quick reminder of what to watch for.
Dry guitar warning signs
- Sharp fret ends.
- Lower action or new buzzing.
- Top sinking on an acoustic.
- Cracks or finish checking.
- Fretboard shrinkage.
Wet guitar warning signs
- Rising action.
- Swollen acoustic top.
- Bridge or saddle geometry changes.
- Muffled response.
- Sticky feel or corrosion.
Good habits
- Use a reliable hygrometer.
- Store guitars in stable rooms.
- Use case humidification when needed.
- Avoid car trunks, direct sun and heater vents.
- Let instruments acclimate after travel.
Bench rule
If humidity caused the guitar to move, stabilize it before making major setup or repair decisions. A guitar that is still moving is not ready to tell the whole truth.
FAQ
Should I try this repair myself?
Only if the adjustment is reversible and you understand what you are changing. If a part feels stuck, tight or risky, stop.
When should I contact the bench?
When the symptom changes quickly, the guitar gets worse, the truss rod resists movement, frets are loose, or the repair involves structure, wiring, cracks or neck geometry.
