A new pickup can change a guitar, but it does not fix dirty pots, weak solder joints, bad switches, grounding problems or sloppy wiring. Sometimes the pickup is fine and the circuit around it is the problem.
Start with symptoms
Scratchy controls, dropouts, weak output, hum and intermittent signal should be diagnosed before parts are ordered. A good repair plan separates tone preference from actual electronics failure.
