When fretwork is the real fix
A setup adjusts the guitar around the frets. Fretwork corrects the playing surface itself. If one area of the neck buzzes no matter how the action is adjusted, or bends choke out in the same spot every time, the frets need a closer look.
The goal is not to remove metal for no reason. The goal is to find the smallest honest repair that makes the guitar play cleanly.
Common fretwork symptoms
- Buzzing in one section of the neck after a setup
- Notes fretting out during bends
- Action has to be kept too high to avoid noise
- Rough, scratchy or oxidized frets under the fingers
- Sharp fret ends after dry weather or seasonal movement
- Flat spots, divots or visible fret wear under common chord shapes
Fretwork is diagnosed before cutting metal. Sometimes a polish is enough; sometimes the guitar needs a level, crown and polish; sometimes a worn instrument needs a bigger conversation.
