Acoustic guitar repair

Acoustic guitars move, dry out, swell, lift, buzz and slowly drift away from where they should be. The right repair depends on what the guitar is actually doing.

Acoustic setups from $70

What this service is for

Acoustic work includes setups, bone nuts and saddles, bridge evaluation, under-saddle pickups, K&K-style pickups, fret evaluation and basic structural repair by estimate.

An acoustic is not just an electric guitar with a wooden box. Saddle height, neck angle, top movement, bridge health and humidity all affect what can safely be adjusted.

Common acoustic problems

  • High action caused by saddle height, neck angle or humidity movement
  • Buzzing from low saddle, uneven frets, loose hardware or dried-out wood
  • Lifting bridge, loose brace, belly bulge or bridge-plate concerns
  • Worn nut or saddle causing tuning and intonation issues
  • Weak, quacky or uneven acoustic pickup output
  • Seasonal changes that make the guitar feel different every few months

Acoustic guitars move with humidity and age, so the right repair depends on the neck, bridge, saddle, top and overall condition of the instrument.

High action is a symptom, not the diagnosis

Lowering the saddle can help when the guitar has enough saddle left and the neck/top geometry supports it. If the neck angle, bridge or top is the real problem, cutting the saddle lower may only hide the issue for a little while.

Bench rule

Measure the guitar before removing material. Once saddle or nut material is gone, it is gone.

Nuts and saddles

Bone nut and saddle work can improve feel, tuning, string height and contact, but only when cut for the guitar and the player.

Bridge and top concerns

Lifting bridges, belly bulge, bridge-plate wear and loose braces need a careful look before normal setup work makes sense.

Acoustic pickups

Under-saddle and bridge-plate style pickups need clean installation, good string balance and practical planning around the guitar.

Humidity matters

Dry and wet seasons change the repair answer

New England winters, air conditioning, Florida humidity and storage habits can move an acoustic guitar enough to change action, fret ends, top shape and tuning behavior.

If a guitar suddenly changes, the best first question is not always "what part do we replace?" Sometimes it is "what changed around the guitar?"

Acoustic FAQ

Questions players ask before acoustic repair

Can you lower the action on my acoustic?

Usually, but the first step is checking why the action is high. Saddle height, neck angle, top movement, relief and humidity all matter.

Why did my acoustic start buzzing?

Buzz can come from setup movement, low saddle, uneven frets, loose braces, hardware, dry wood or a change in strings and tuning.

Can you install an acoustic pickup?

Yes, depending on the guitar and pickup type. The install should consider string balance, saddle fit, cable routing and how the guitar will be used live.

Is a lifting bridge serious?

It can be. A lifting bridge should be inspected before string tension makes the problem worse or damages the top.

Need the acoustic checked?

Send clear photos of the bridge, saddle, top and the action if you can. I will help sort out whether this sounds like setup work, humidity movement or deeper repair.
